📌 Milton, Highland

Located by the single track road along the north shore of the Beauly Firth, Redcastle used to be a bit of a hidden gem – though some local tour companies now appear to be visiting it. The first castle on this site was known as Edirdovar and was built by William the Lion in 1179, while owners in the centuries since have included Clan Mackenzie and Lord Burton of Dochfour. The roofless, L-plan ruin visible today mostly dates to 1641, with newer features from 19th century renovations. The modern name comes from the rusty-hued stonework, which is in an obvious poor state of repair; fences prevent access to the interior.

💬 From the car park it’s a 5-min walk to the castle. Follow the quiet road away from the coast, taking the first right onto a track through a gate. Follow the track (which can be muddy) to the right, with the castle soon visible ahead.
