Modern-day Prestonpans isn’t that exciting, but one of the original settlements it swallowed up (Preston – Priest Town) has left behind a beautiful marcat (or market) cross as a reminder of its ancient roots, half a mile or so back from the sea front. The 17th century monument has a shaft topped by a beautiful unicorn: historically a symbol of Scottish monarchy, and today the national animal. According to custodians Historic Environment Scotland, this is the only surviving monument of its type still in situ anywhere in the country.
