The Old Low Light is the oldest remaining occupied building at Fish Quay: a 13th century fishing village which has grown up to become a major port, and England’s largest for prawns. The building – along with The Old High Light – was erected in the early 16th century to provide safe passage through the treacherous Narrows at the mouth of the River Tyne, and has latterly been turned into a community hub with a smart heritage centre. There are good views across the estuary from the top viewing platform. The centre of Fish Quay on Union Quay is also well worth the short walk, and boasts an enviable cluster of seafood restaurants alongside more traditional fishmongers and a smokery, as well as the large prawn and crab market.
