Built in 1660, the Old Bridge House is Dumfries‘ oldest residence. It stands at (and is in fact built into) the southwest end of the 15th century Devorgilla Bridge – which still provides a way across the River Nith to the town centre for pedestrians. The building originally belonged to a barrel maker and later became an inn, during which time it was likely to have been visited by then exciseman Robert Burns. Nowadays it’s a tiny museum with each room portraying a different aspect of town life, from dentistry to family living.
