📌 Nybster, Highland
★★

We first came across Nybster Broch as the subject of an aerial view photograph. Find a similar shot by using Google Maps satellite view (other methods are available!) and it’s easy to see that this is more than just a broch: there are several buildings connected by passages, and a spectacular coastal location on one of northeast Scotland’s headlands. Combine this with the short walk from the nearest car park, and a picturesque stony bay accessible en route, and it makes an interesting stop on the North Coast 500. The adjacent Mervyn’s Tower memorial unfortunately seems to have been constructed using bits of the broch, and the whole site was a little overgrown on our visit – otherwise this would be really quite a special spot.
