๐Ÿ“Œ Town, Dumfries & Galloway
โ˜…

For both car and public transport users, Newton Stewart makes one of the best single bases for western Galloway, being the nexus of several main roads serving this large, rural region. With the Galloway Forest Park on the doorstep and The Machars peninsula to the south, nearby attractions run the gamut from mountain biking, upland and coastal hikes to historic and religious sites – see the area map below. Newton Stewart itself is a planned estate town dating back to the 1600s. It isn’t notably attractive (a few pots of paint would go a long way), but offers a longish list of mainly budget-friendly dining options, supermarkets, a small museum and newish distillery. The River Cree runs parallel to the main street; head to the park around the war memorial for the best photo spot, overlooking the 1813 Bridge of Cree.
