Newcastle Cathedral is found at the heart of its city near Newcastle Castle‘s Black Gate, and forms the mother church of the Church of England’s northernmost diocese. From the outside the building has a rather stumpy appearance, dwarfed by its 194-foot, 15th century lantern tower once used as a navigation beacon by ships on the River Tyne. Inside, the church gleams after a major 2021 restoration with a seamless fusion of old and new: the Victorian alabaster pulpit and northern England’s oldest eagle lectern alongside cool blue versions commissioned in 2022, for example. Other highlights include the tiny medieval stained-glass roundel in the St Margaret side chapel, 14th century crypt, 15th century font with now-off-centre canopy, and – last but not least – extraordinarily ornate woodwork and stonework around the quire and High Altar. Regular churchgoer or not, consider attending a choral service to hear the fine choir and organ too.
