Today bypassed by a kink in the A1 dual carriageway, Morpeth has long been one of the most important hubs and market town, as well as the Northumbrian capital. Its location is a strategic one, embraced by a heart-shaped meander on the River Wansbeck; a bridge here helped the settlement grow up as a staging post on the Great North Road, and there is also a station on the East Coast Main Line railway. The two main streets – Bridge Street and Newgate Street – are pleasantly bustling and flanked by attractive, independent retailers. Bridge Street is seamlessly linked to the bus station, car parks and nearby supermarket by an immaculate and decidedly upmarket shopping arcade. The arcade is overlooked on the north side by a black bull sculpture, harking back to the 18th century cattle market which sold Aberdeen Angus bulls from beyond the Scottish border. Visit the unusual bagpipe museum, climb up to the old castle gatehouse in the local park or wander along the riverside – some of the options are listed below.
