πŸ“Œ Town in Angus
β˜…β˜…

An historic coastal town with attractive High Street, busy harbour, grand old buildings and numerous statues – why isn’t Montrose better known? The local sights – a central museum, a military air station and a long but underused beach – perhaps aren’t the most fashionable of destinations these days, but the wider region has plenty to do if the sun is shining. Three sides of the town are bordered by water, with Montrose Basin wildlife reserve on the inland side particularly impressive at low tide (it’s well seen from both the railway line and Esk Road). The magnificent House of Dun lies close to its western edge. And last but least: we are of the opinion that the coastal scenery around Montrose is some of the most quietly beautiful in Scotland. The superb beaches at St Cyrus and Lunan Bay are a few miles to the north and south respectively, while the unusual sight of Elephant Rock is reached by a wander along the cliffs from Boddin Point or Ferryden.

🚢 The town centre is worth a wander and you could head to the beach on the eastern outskirts, but not many other spots are reachable without dull road walking.

πŸš†πŸšŒ Montrose has a railway station on the line between Dundee and Aberdeen, with plenty of direct trains from cities further south. There are also many bus routes, including from Dundee, Aberdeen and Arbroath.
