πŸ“Œ Meigle, Perth & Kinross
β˜…β˜…β˜…

Spend time in northeast Scotland and you’ll soon hear about the Picts. This group of people dominated the region in the 8th to 10th centuries AD, and are today known best for the elaborate – and sometimes mysterious – carvings they left on standing stones. One of the very best collections is found in the rural village of Meigle, which is believed to have been one of the main Pictish power bases. 26 carved stones are on display here; all were discovered locally and range from towering cross-slabs to recumbent gravestones and even a hogback tombstone. There is an excellent interpretive guidebook available on-site – or chat to the helpful museum staff.
