πŸ“Œ Town in City of Edinburgh
β˜…β˜…β˜…

A long time ago, the Edinburgh suburb of Leith was an area that tourists were warned away from. That sentiment has long gone: the capital’s port area has been extensively redeveloped and revived in the past couple of decades, and it’s now one of the city’s most underrated districts. New offices and apartments stand shoulder to shoulder with old port buildings – particularly along and around a smart section of the Water of Leith known as The Shore. A string of high-end eateries here (such as the excellent Ship on the Shore) have menus bursting with Scottish seafood, even if the “local” catch probably isn’t as local as it used to be. For something more casual, browse the Saturday farmers market at Dock Place for food, crafts and more. Andrew Lamb’s house is worth a short detour away from the riverside: a beautifully-restored merchant’s house on Burgess Street which dates to the early 1600s. Meanwhile, the large Ocean Terminal shopping centre can be found on the coast at the Port of Leith, beyond a series of rejuvenated quays. As well as containing a (dwindling) selection of chain shops, restaurants and cinema, the mall provides access to Royal Yacht Britannia – see below for more info.
