Leazes Park is Newcastle‘s oldest green space, purpose-built in 1873 after local workers petitioned the council for a recreation area. The main draw is a pleasant circular pond with central island – where the local ducks and geese can retreat to at the sight of a naughty dog. A nearby lodge houses a cafΓ© and toilets, while those in a more energetic mood can access tennis and basketball courts, and even a small maze. Live music events sometimes take place in the area around the promenade and bandstand to the southwest; the aftermath of one of these prevented us exploring this side of the park on our 2023 visit.
