📌 Cromarty, Highland
★★★

In 1802, Hugh Miller was born in this thatched cottage in Cromarty village – a humble beginning for someone who would go on to become a famous geologist, writer (to be honest: all-round polymath) and one of Scotland’s most famous figures. The cottage – built by Hugh’s pirate great-grandfather – contrasts with the adjacent Georgian villa built for Hugh’s father; clearly this was a family which was going places. Both buildings are now cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, with the cottage preserved as it may have looked in the 19th century, and the villa converted into an interesting museum about the man’s life and manifold interests.
