The long dale extending northeast from the town of Moffat leads to one of southern Scotland’s most impressive waterfalls – and the UK’s fifth highest according to some sources. Grey Mare’s Tail (sat nav users beware – there are several in Scotland with the same name) leaps 60 metres as the Tail Burn escapes from a hanging valley in the Moffat Hills. The foaming white fan of falling water bears some resemblance to a white horse’s tail. Although the falls are just out of sight from the car park, the main viewpoints (on both banks) are only a short distance away. 💬 From the car park it’s a 5-min walk to the first decent waterfall viewpoints via a choice of two paths, one on either side of the burn, or 20 mins to the top of the falls via the right bank path (⬤ Easy / ⬤ Moderate depending on how far you go).
