The Great North Museum has its roots within Newcastle‘s Literary and Philosophical Society, which later spawned the Natural History Society of Northumbria. The society’s ever-expanding collections eventually required a new, purpose-built museum to house them: hence the current building, opened in 1884. John Hancock was one of the principal fundraisers, and also donated some of his own collections. The museum is perhaps not as overwhelmingly large as at first might appear, with about a dozen medium-sized galleries laid out over two floors. Northumbria is well represented through its Hadrian’s Wall, Anglo-Saxon and wildlife exhibitions, but much of the remaining space looks further afield to Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Africa, Asia and beyond.
