📌 Town in Highland
★★

Grantown-on-Spey makes a quieter, more refined alternative to Aviemore as a base for exploring the northern part of the Cairngorms National Park. Set back from the River Spey, the town nestles amongst splendid Cairngorms scenery rich in wildlife: red squirrels, pine martens, capercaillie, red deer and mountain hare can all be found in the pinewoods and rolling hills surrounding the town – and ospreys during the summer months at nearby Loch Garten. Two railway stations in Victorian times dwindled to none during 20th century cuts, but following the reopening of Grantown East as a heritage centre and plans for an extension of the Strathspey Railway to Grantown West, the town may be back to two again (of sorts) sometime this century…

🚶 The museum is close to the centre. Grantown East can be reached following pleasant tracks through Anagach Wood.

🚌 Grantown can be reached by a few bus routes, including from Aviemore, but there are better bases for those without a car.
