📌 Alford, Aberdeenshire
★★★

A rural village set back from the middle reaches of the River Don, Alford seems a rather unlikely location for a day out at first glance – but there’s plenty to do here. The star attraction has to be the excellent and surprisingly extensive transport museum is the highlight, set up in the 1980s by local enthusiasts and still flourishing. Cars, buses, Aberdeen trams, royal carriages and bikes are all part of the collection – as for trains, the Alford Valley Community Railway departs from the other end of the museum car park.
