Glengyle perfectly encapsulates the tumultuous story of the Campbeltown whisky region, which has lurched from obscurity through fame to near-ruin over the past two centuries. It was born out of an argument (apparently over sheep!) between William and John Mitchell – the two brothers in charge of Springbank Distillery – leading to William leaving and setting up Glengyle Distillery in 1872. Production stopped in the early 20th century amidst a difficult economic climate, and the buildings were used for a variety of other purposes until distillation finally restarted in 2000. The new owner? A company overseen by William Mitchell’s great-great-nephew. This fascinating history is the highlight of what feels like a fairly modern distillery, in direct contrast to Springbank, where tours begin. By the way – Glengyle whisky is (slightly confusingly) bottled under the Kilkerran label, which is a reference to the church of St Kerran, upon which Campbeltown was founded. Study the logo on the bottles, and see if you can find a similar view on the tour.
