Glenfarclas Distillery is one of the last family-owned, major distilleries in Scotland, having been owned by the Grant family since 1865. The name means valley of the green grass, although the translation doesn’t quite seem to fit with the windswept location set against the backdrop of lofty Ben Rinnes. If you’re looking for a pretty, picture-postcard distillery then this might not be the best candidate, but tours are excellent and entertaining, incorporating the largest whisky stills on Speyside along with an impressive tasting room reconstructed from the RMS Empress of Australia – a ship which carried the last British troops home from India.
