A simple stone cairn inside a roofless, long-ruined cottage in the abandoned township of Milton, South Uist commemorates one of the most famous women in Scottish history, probably close to where she was born in 1722. Flora MacDonald smuggled Bonnie Prince Charlie – disguised as Flora’s maid – from Benbecula to Skye in June 1746 to avoid capture by pro-government forces, following the Jacobites’ defeat at the Battle of Culloden. Flora was eventually caught and imprisoned; following her release a year later she returned to Scotland but later moved to North Carolina and subsequently Nova Scotia, before spending her last years back on Skye where she died at Kilmuir in 1790. Although Flora is believed to have been born at Milton, this is far from certain, and there’s certainly no guarantee that the ruined building itself has any connection to her!
