πŸ“Œ Battlefield on Culloden Muir, Highland
β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

Just beyond the eastern suburbs of Inverness, Culloden Battlefield is one of Scotland’s most emotive places. This was the site of the final conflict of the 1745 Jacobite uprising against government loyalists, and the last hand-to-hand battle fought on British soil. The battlefield itself is free to visit (and to pay respects – this is a mass war grave), with memorial cairns, graves and flags marking out key events from the conflict. Indoors, a carefully curated audio-visual exhibition tells the story another way, and is worth the admission fee; this part is probably best done first, to help understand how the battle unfolded. The overall experience can be quite overwhelming, so keep a packet of tissues handy.
