Etal, Northumberland
★★
Etal Castle overlooks the River Till on the west side of Etal village. Built by Robert Manners in the 14th century, the castle was intended to repel Scots marauding from the north, but was captured by James IV’s army in 1513. James’ forces were then almost immediately defeated at the nearby Battle of Flodden, and the castle duly passed back to English ownership. (The outcome for James IV was even worse.) There is an impressive gatehouse as well as the four-storey tower house: a hollow shell which can be entered to gaze up at the thick walls and window alcoves.
