📌 Edlingham, Northumberland
★★★

Edlingham Castle stands close to its namesake burn on the east side of its namesake village – not to be confused with the similar-sounding settlement of Eglingham, six miles to the north. This ruined hall house was built around 1300 by Sir William Felton on the site of an earlier manor. The part which has survived best is actually a “solar tower” added half a century later as more comfortable private quarters; one segment is leaning at such an angle as to give the Tower of Pisa a run for its money. The surrounding courtyard, ranges and the original hall house are now little more than foundations and it’s difficult to work out the purpose of the individual buildings. If you are visiting, load up the official English Heritage website on your smartphone to help piece together the visual puzzle. The path to the castle passes St John the Baptist Church, mostly dating to the mid 12th century, and also worth a visit.
