Perched atop a grassy hilltop on the former site of Elgin Castle, the Duke of Gordon Monument should be a great vantage point for Elgin town centre; it’s just a shame that so much of the view consists of retail parks, busy roads and parked cars. Never mind – the walk up is a short and easy one, so it should probably be part of a visit to the town. The Tuscan column stands 80 feet high and commemorates the 5th Duke of Gordon, with a statue of him at the top. Bits of the old castle walls are still visible immediately to the east; this former royal stronghold has been ruined for at least 500 years.
