The Duddo stones are found amidst rolling pastoral countryside between Coldstream and Berwick-upon-Tweed, roughly four miles south of the Anglo-Scottish Border. The exact number of stones is not immediately clear: they are marked as Duddo Four Stones on some Ordnance Survey maps, but generally better-known as the Duddo Five Stones. In fact, evidence for seven stones was found during excavation in the 1890s. With all that out of the way – the stones are pleasingly patterned by grooves eroded by water, and the 4,000 year-old monument enjoys a majestic setting surrounded by the “big sky country” in this part of Northumberland.
