Dornoch is too easily missed, being bypassed at a distance by the main A9 road up Scotland’s northeast coast, and also by the railway which cuts much further inland here before returning to the coast at Golspie. With unusually flat and fertile land for this high latitude, some surprisingly grand buildings including a cathedral and castle, world-class golf course, extensive beaches and a university campus, it has a lot in common with the Fife town of St Andrews – though Dornoch is much smaller (population around 1,500) and less touristy. Many of the buildings are constructed from a warm, orange-hued stone which further adds to the charm, especially in soft evening light. An idyllic spot, then – truly a land of “milk and honey” (which happens to be the name of one of the cafes on the High Street).
