Dalgarven Mill Museum – formerly the Museum of Ayrshire Country Life and Costume – is housed in Dalgarven Mill: a restored corn mill on the River Garnock a couple of miles north of Kilwinning. The mill closed in the 1970s but the Ferguson family owners restored the derelict buildings a decade later. Today you can climb up through three floors, each showcasing rural industries, mocked-up millers’ living quarters and traditional Lowland dress, plus temporary exhibitions (about fashion on cruise ships on our visit!). You then descend past the restored mill mechanisms, helped only slightly by complicated diagrams explaining how it all works. It’s one of those places which seems to have acquired more exhibits than the staff know what to do with, with piles of rusting tools and other equipment – some of which not even the curators know the purpose of. Housed in a similarly antique building, it’s quite a charming setup. Wrap up warm if visiting in winter: there’s no proper heating, and a warm welcome only goes so far.
