๐Ÿ“Œ Torthorwald, Dumfries & Galloway
โ˜…โ˜…

A “cruck” cottage is one using natural trunks (or crucks) as its main roof support pillars. The method was widespread in Britain from the medieval period up until the 19th century, and a few still remain in Scotland. Moirlanich Longhouse near Killin is one survivor; this one is much further south in the roadside village of Torthorwald, near Dumfries. Occupied until the 1950s, the cottage has since undergone several cycles of repair and decay, and is currently cared for by a local trust. Visitors can usually collect a key locally to explore the interior, which contains period household items and photographs of the restoration project – but the highlight is the marvellous roof, on full display.
