📌 Morpeth, Northumberland

Cross the river from the middle of Morpeth and you’ll arrive at the edge of Carlisle Park: a green space donated to the town council by the Countess of Carlisle in 1916, and containing many of the town’s most interesting features. The grassy hump of Ha’ Hill is the site of a medieval motte and bailey castle, with excellent views across town as well as a few tame sheep. This is separated by a steep-sided, wooded dene from its (mostly) 14th century replacement; the gatehouse has been recently restored and converted into holiday accommodation. Lower down, there’s a small aviary next to colourful formal gardens, and wide paths along the River Wansbeck.
