The small town of Blackridge is rarely visited these days, but its position halfway between Glasgow and Edinburgh saw it thrive as a coaching stop on the late 18th century road between the two cities, with the railway also arriving here in 1862. Transport is therefore one of the main themes of the tiny community museum squeezed into one end of Craig Inn Community Centre – which fittingly occupies the original coaching inn. Industry is the other focus; coal and whinstone quarrying formed the – err – bedrock of the local economy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
