📌 Town in South Lanarkshire
★★

Once a significant market town, Biggar sits at a strategic crossroads just south of Scotland’s Central Belt, and right on the watershed between the west-flowing River Clyde and east-flowing River Tweed. Its rural location some distance from any big settlements has allowed it to retain a decent selection of independent businesses, and the main Edinburgh to Carlisle road passes right through through the centre, adding to the bustling feel even if some residents might bemoan the lack of a bypass. Until recently the town had three separate museums – notable for a place of this small size – but two of them merged in 2015 to form the excellent Biggar & Upper Clydesdale Museum. The other is Biggar Gasworks Museum: a fascinating piece of industrial heritage, also well worth visiting.
