πŸ“Œ Barry, Angus
β˜…β˜…β˜…

Nestling in a wooded dell by the Pitairlie Burn near Carnoustie, Barry Mill is a now extremely rare example of a working oatmeal mill. These used to be a common sight all over Scotland – all producing a vital foodstuff for local customers – but most closed through the 1900s, with Barry Mill shutting down in 1982. Happily, the National Trust for Scotland has since fully refurbished the machinery and repaired flood damage – pure barry, as some locals might say (or not). Regular demonstrations now take place, though not on every day the attraction is open – check ahead. If the weather’s good, a picturesque nature trail follows the mill’s lade (water supply channel) upstream for about half a mile, with an alternative return route.
