Fabulous Balnakeil Bay spans almost the entire western side of Faraid Head: the peninsula jutting into the Atlantic to the north of Durness. We explored it as part of an excellent walk around the peninsula itself, but the beach has a handy adjacent car park and can just as easily be visited on its own merits. Speaking of cars, you might spot vehicles driving along the sands. This is normal (though not permitted for the general public) – the end of Faraid Head is home to a firing range, and the beach acts as the access road! The nearby Balnakeil Craft Village has a couple of food options, with more in Durness village.
