Loosely set around a small bay with splendid sunsets and a sizeable harbour (with seasonal sailings to the Small Isles), you’ll come across Arisaig sooner or later if exploring the Road to the Isles between Fort William and Mallaig. Numerous other west coast villages in Scotland make more alluring bases, but none of them are in this neck of the woods: aside from end-of-the-road Mallaig, nowhere within half an hour’s drive has a comparatively healthy selection of places to eat and sleep. The Crofter’s Bar at the Arisaig Hotel has a decent atmosphere and good seafood options for dinner (though we found prices slightly on the high side).

🚶 Arisaig itself is tiny, but the area’s best beaches aren’t really within walking distance – use public transport or a bike.
🚢🚆🚌 Arisaig has a station on the West Highland railway line between Glasgow and Mallaig (for connections with the ferry to Skye) via Fort William, and is on the Fort William to Mallaig bus route. There are seasonal passenger ferries to the Small Isles.
