π Town in Angus

Forfar may be the capital of Angus but Arbroath is its largest town, located in the far southeast of the region overlooking the North Sea. The biggest draw is the grand, ruined abbey with important links to Scotland’s former independence. Less well known but still worth visiting is the town’s Signal Tower Museum, telling the story of Arbroath’s links with the coast. These two attractions are on either side of a faintly attractive but (in 2025) noticeably struggling High Street and extensive harbour which both repay exploration too. While in town, look out for Arbroath Smokies (smoked haddock) on sale, although they were actually first made in nearby Auchmithie, which is reachable by an excellent coastal walk.
