The council-run Signal Tower Museum in Arbroath definitely isn’t the town’s best known visitor attraction (that award goes to Arbroath Abbey), but should be an essential part of any visit to this coastal town. It contains interesting displays about Arbroath’s long maritime history, especially covering the Bell Rock Lighthouse: the world’s oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse, located on a reef several miles offshore. Families of the lighthouse keepers were once housed in the mainland signal tower and operations base; the lighthouse is now fully automated and the signal tower has appropriately been converted into today’s museum. The signal tower itself can be accessed by tour on certain days – see below for info.
