The council-run Signal Tower Museum in Arbroath definitely isn’t the town’s most popular visitor attraction (that award goes to Arbroath Abbey), but makes an essential part of any visit to this sizeable coastal town. It contains interesting displays about Arbroath’s long maritime history, including the Bell Rock Lighthouse which is the world’s oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse, located on a reef several miles offshore. Families of the lighthouse keepers were once housed in the mainland signal tower and operations base; the lighthouse is now fully automated and the signal tower has appropriately been converted into today’s museum.
