📌 Town in Northumberland
★★★

Alnwick epitomises much of what is good about eastern Northumberland: picturesque yet bustling market towns, thriving independent shops, an excellent food scene and imposing castles. And what a castle! Alnwick Castle alone is worth a day trip from southeast Scotland – whether or not you’re a fan of the Harry Potter universe – and the adjacent Alnwick Garden is also one of the very “best in class”. Daytrippers attempting to do both of these premier league attractions justice in a single day may struggle; two or three days will allow time to explore the town’s charming cobbled streets, visit the nearby steam railway, or go for a ramble along the River Aln. Upstream leads into the Hulne Park former hunting ground; downstream eventually leads to the the town’s coastal outpost at Alnmouth.

🚶 Alnwick makes a good base for a few days for those without a car. The famous castle and garden are next to the compact town centre, while Barter Books is a short walk to the east. Aln Valley Railway’s west terminus is a long mile away beyond the A1 bypass. Footpaths along the River Aln in either direction are easily accessible.

🚌 The busy bus station is served by routes from settlements including Newcastle, Morpeth, Alnmouth, Wooler and Berwick-upon-Tweed.
