The River Feshie has sculpted one of Scotland’s most beautiful glens: this great meltwater river is bordered by miles of ancient and restored Caledonian forest in its middle and lower reaches. This waymarked trail from Feshiebridge explores just a tiny part of the water course, where it flows through a small gorge full of deep potholes, rushing rapids and a variety of fish species. The woodland return is less interesting, but you may be lucky and spot a red squirrel – also look for wood ant nests. The western wall of the Cairngorms is well seen from deforested stretches, with scree runs and heather leading the eye up to Creag Mhigeachaidh. The shorter Frank Bruce Sculpture Trail shares the same car park and is featured here separately.
