The Church of the Holy Rude’s east end overlooks the main road up to Stirling Castle. Founded in 1129, the church had to be substantially rebuilt after a 1405 fire swept through the city; most of the church therefore dates to this time, including the nave, south aisle, tower and the magnificent medieval timber roof. A useful leaflet (in 2023) points out twenty points of interest around the church, taking in Scotland’s biggest pipe organ, resplendent stained glass windows, ten carved consecration crosses, and a stone marking the point where James VI was coronated in 1567. Unusually for a UK place of worship, there’s an admission charge for non-worshipping tourists.
