Moffat enjoys a location right at the heart of southern Scotland, but has to be sought out – it lies just off the M74 motorway north from the English border towards Glasgow. Now bypassed by many tourists with sights set further north, the town had two early functions, as a staging post thanks to its geographic location, and as a spa destination due to nearby sulphur springs. Both characteristics allowed numerous hotels to flourish, including the still extant Star Hotel: reputedly the world’s narrowest. Moffat’s once-former wool market is commemorated by the curly-horned Moffat Ram statue atop a fountain, and by the vast Moffat Woollen Mill tourist complex on the outskirts of town. Moffat Toffee is another local claim to fame, and there is still a central toffee shop (along with a separate ice cream and sweet shop, and hopefully a good dentist). Today’s visitor will find an attractive High Street with a good range of independent businesses, picturesque park with pond and pedalos, friendly museum, and arresting upland scenery at the nearby Devil’s Beef Tub and along Moffat Dale – see the area map below.
