📌 Etal, Northumberland
★★★

The River Till drains a large part of the northern Cheviot Hills, and its power has been harnessed for centuries at Heatherslaw Corn Mill, which has stood here since at least 1291. After its closure in the mid 20th century, the mill was purchased by a trust and opened to the public in 1975 as a working museum, turning locally-grown wheat into flour which can be purchased from a Northumberland food retailer. All three floors of the historic building can be explored, along with the sights and sounds of moving machinery – unless (as on our visit) low water levels prevent the waterwheel from turning!
