📌 Wildlife reserve in Montrose, Angus

This vast, sheltered estuary makes an impressive introduction to Montrose as you enter the town on the East Coast Mainline from further south. 750 hectares of tidal mud flats are protected from North Sea storms by a narrowing of the channel between here and the nearby river mouth, and thus provide ideal overwintering habitat for over 100,000 waders and waterfowl, including pink footed geese, curlew and wigeon. The visitor centre on the south side is a good place to find out more, but is awkwardly separated from most of the footpaths and bird hides which are found on the west side around Bridge of Dun, a few miles away. A bike or car is therefore useful to make the most out of the area.
