Girvan is in many ways a typical Firth of Clyde seaside resort, with a long beach and picturesque harbour. But its isolated southerly position far from major population centres gives it something of a backwater feel. The town has an unusual cross-shaped street layout which is well seen from the summit of nearby Byne Hill. Up close, there are a good number of thriving, old-fashioned cafes and coffee shops – with low prices leaving plenty of change to spend in the excellent sweet shop (guilty!). The central Auld Stumpy tower is one of the main landmarks and originally served as the town’s jail. Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran loom large out to sea, and most boat trips to the former depart from here.
