๐Ÿ“Œ Westquarter, Falkirk
โ˜…

This well-preserved lectern dovecot dates from the 18th century and once supplied food for the Westquarter Estate. There are nestboxes for hundreds of pairs of pigeons inside; birds were kept for meat, eggs and manure. There is no public access to the interior, but you can still see the attractive architecture and rows of flight holes. A panel above the door bears the coat of arms of Sir William and Dame Helenore Livingstone, who built a new mansion nearby – though the 1647 date indicates the panel was not originally made for the dovecot. Country estate has since become housing estate, and the dovecot is now surrounded by modern residential homes.
