Robert Burns is perhaps most closely associated with Alloway and Dumfries, but what about Irvine? The poet spent a short time in the harbour town in 1781 as a flax-dresser, and this is celebrated at the Wellwood Burns Centre on Eglinton Street. The museum originally operated as Irvine Burns Club (established in 1826, and still active today), and contains original manuscripts, superb murals and paintings, an old chair used by Burns and correspondence with honorary members – including Andrew Carnegie, Sean Connery, Nicola Benedetti and many more famous names. There’s plenty to see, assisted by passionate guides; allow a couple of hours.
