The 150-foot Waterloo Monument guides walkers to the top of Peniel Heugh: a volcanic outcrop a few miles east of Ancrum. The summit – 200 metres above Teviotdale – boasts a 360 degree panorama across Borders countryside, with the Eildon Hills prominent to the northwest and the Cheviots laid out on the southeastern horizon. The tower, commemorating the battle of the same name, dates to the early 19th century; it’s the second incarnation after the original monument collapsed.
