📌 Greenhead, Northumberland
★★★★
Walltown Crags is one of the largest whinstone outcrops on Hadrian’s Wall. It presents as abrupt north-facing cliffs, used as an extra barrier by Romans defending against Caledonian tribes. The wall and this walk follow the cliff edge, with great views in all directions from the various high points. Other highlights include two picturesque lakes created out of old whinstone quarries, and Turret 45A, one of many towers and castles built at regular intervals to further fortify the wall.
