π Trotternish, Isle of Skye

This is one of Skye’s busy bucket list attractions – and unlike some of the others, we reckon it’s worth the hype. The Old Man of Storr is an enormous rock pinnacle surrounded by several other unlikely shapes, all formed by a continuous landslip pulling the area away from The Storr summit on the Trotternish ridge. Prometheus and The Wicker Man are just two of the films partially set here. The most famous view is from a minor summit beyond most of the landforms, but this route first detours to the west to explore the area from all angles. An early start is recommended to avoid the crowds; mornings also give the best light here for photography.
