Walk: MacGregor’s Cave – 1-bed studio, requires improvement

Set on a rocky hillside above Dunalastair Reservoir in Perthshire, MacGregor’s Cave was reputedly once a hideout for members of the outlawed clan – of which Rob Roy was the most famous member. The mossy woodland location definitely seems like it would have been an effective hiding place, especially before the giveaway window and door were added later on as “improvements” for Victorian estate visitors! There are excellent views across the glen of the River Tummel and ruined Dunalastair Castle from a mound opposite the cave – as well as from the scenic approach track which contours the edge of Dunalastair Reservoir.

➡️ Out-and-back walk: start – follow road east to Crossmount track junction – track along Dunalastair Water to path junction immediately before cottage – MacGregor’s Cave via path – viewpoint opposite cave – start by outward route

🥾 On our last visit

Wildlife: A few sheep & lambs on approach to the cave, lizards, a dipper, thrushes, butterflies. Possible glimpses of a woodpecker & a cuckoo. On approach to the walk: red deer, roe deer, red squirrel & Highland cows.

Weather: Sunshine with light winds & temperature in mid teens.
