π Killiecrankie, Perth & Kinross

This short walk along the banks of the rivers Garry and Tummel has all the scenic delights typical of Perthshire and the heart of Scotland: majestic forests populated by red squirrels, grand rivers and waterfalls, fleeting mountain vistas and stunning leaf colours in autumn. Detour from the main path for a view of the serene confluence between the two rivers, then follow the Tummel upstream to the constrastingly foamy falls; the cascades are popular with kayakers but less so with salmon, which use the Edwardian fish ladder alongside. River levels are controlled by a dam upstream. The return is less scenically interesting but the quieter surroundings offer better scope for red squirrel sightings.
